Jots and Tittles

Author: Anonym

In Matthew 5:18 (KJV) we read of Jesus telling his disciples, "For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled." Modern translations don't use the terms "jot" and "tittle", favouring terms such as "smallest letter" and "least stroke of a pen" (NIV). So, what do these terms really mean, and what was the point that Jesus was making?
